With a list like this, the plan is very simple: Cast Defender's Ward on everything, hurl the Cinerators in first, with the Vanquisher and Kreoss close behind, Repenter on one flank. Defender of the Imperium contains the novels Death or Glory, Duty Calls and Cain's Last Stand, plus the short story Traitor's Gambit and a new introduction from author Sandy Mitchell. Ciaphus Cain is usually described as a 40k version of Flashman. The Ciaphas Cain omnibuses (Hero of the Imperium and Defender of the Imperium) do a good job of easing you into the setting. Plus, the Imperium had a Butlerian jihad a while back so their autonomous systems technology is remarkably primitive. So I've burned through most of the second Ciaphus Cain omnibus now. Once you read Hero of the Imperium and want to continue on with Cain's adventures, the next omnibus, Defender of the Imperium, is a good place to start.
